Yoni steaming — also called vaginal steaming or V-steaming — is a self-care ritual with roots in several traditions, including Korean (chai-yok), Mayan, and various African and Caribbean practices. It involves sitting over a bowl or specially designed seat with steam from herbal-infused water directed toward the vulva and perineum. Here’s what the practice involves and what is and isn’t known. Yoni steaming is a traditional self-care practice, not a medical treatment. This is general information, not medical advice.

What Yoni Steaming Is

The practice involves steeping herbs in hot water and allowing the steam to contact the external vulvar area for 20–40 minutes. Herbs commonly used include mugwort, rosemary, calendula, lavender, basil and motherwort, chosen mostly for their warm, earthy aroma. The steam itself is warm and moist; it does not enter the vaginal canal.

Traditional Uses Across Cultures

In Korea, chai-yok has a long history as a women’s self-care ritual. Steam practices also appear in Mayan, Caribbean and West African traditions, usually as a quiet, warm ritual using locally available botanicals.

Why Many Women Enjoy It

What the Research Has Examined

Clinical research on yoni steaming is limited, and it should not be used in place of medical care. The main concern raised by gynecologists is the risk of burns from steam that is too hot, which is why gentle, warm steam and external-only use matter.
